Locating Roustabout Jobs in Texas

When someone mentions oil or oil fields, it’s hard not to think of Texas. Texas has a long history tied directly to the oil business and for good reason. Some the largest oil fields in the world are found in Texas and many fortunes were made because of the black gold. While the Golden age for roustabout jobs in the Longhorn state might be over that doesn’t mean that there still aren’t plenty of opportunities for those workers who are willing to relocate and are willing to look around for job openings. In fact, the city of Houston holds a very strong and well-deserved reputation as a place where roustabouts can go to find good work. The honest truth is there are plenty of roustabout jobs to be found in the state but you can’t dictate where you’re going to work. The days of finding a lot of oil work in southern Texas or parts of western Texas are long gone. If you’re looking to get your foot in the door here, you have to look in the east part of the state.

By far and away Houston is definitely the city to go to if you’re looking for this type of work. However, there are other cities that also are hiring including Fort Worth, Dallas, Galveston, and several other communities that line the eastern coast of the state. Any one of these locations can provide ample opportunity for entry-level workers to get their foot in the door and to have a serious chance to prove that they deserve that beginning roustabout job. You’ll also want to know that many of the employers hiring for these job openings will also often advertise them as roughneck jobs. Whenever you are doing this search for open positions in Texas, make sure the you search for job boards and use both of these terms to give yourself the best chance of finding all the openings that you qualify for and thus increasing your chances of landing the position.

You may have heard a lot of stories about how the oil days are gone in Texas. While it is true that there is a lot of exploration and money being made in Alaska and that deposits in Australia, Africa, and other nations are getting more attention right now, there is no question that plenty of oil drilling still exists in Texas and in the Gulf of Mexico. In other words, Texas might no longer be seen as the sexy pick but there is still plenty of investment and plenty of work and that means jobs for the right people. If you have any fear that oil exploration is going to fade keep in mind that individual oil companies, even in the recession years of 2009 and 2010, are spending tens of billions of dollars just on oil exploration alone. The International Energy Agency even predicts that all companies will literally spend trillions of dollars over the next 30 years to meet the growing demand for oil not only from the United States but also from developing nations like China and India.

For those of you with your heart set on landing a roustabout job in Texas, it is very important for you to remember that just as with any other location landing a good roustabout job is a numbers game. You have a lot of competition and you have a lot of people who want to earn those big paychecks and have a resume to prove they can do hard work for long periods. If you apply for 50 openings, you are much more likely to find that great Texas oil rig job than if you only apply for 10 openings. This might mean extra travel, this might mean a lot of extra time spent tracking down leads but if the end result is a Texas roustabout job, isn’t it worth it?
