As long as oil runs the world, oil rig jobs will continue to exist. Even in the middle of the recession, oil companies worldwide are still spending $400 billion on exploration and drilling. There will still be roustabout jobs for the person who knows how to find them. This article discusses three free methods to find entry level oil rig jobs.The first method of looking for roustabout job vacancies is the old traditional “look at the job advertisements in the newspapers” strategy. Which newspapers? The national dailies, definintely. But also the state dailies, especially for oil producing states like Texas, Pennsylvania, etc. Of course, if you are living in an oil town, you may not ever need to look further than your town newspaper. While buying all these newspapers is expensive, many good libraries should already have subscribtions to them. Just make sure you are first in line at the library every morning.

The second method of looking for roustabout job vacancies is to use the internet. Putting up advertisements in the newspapers and online job boards like Monster (free for job seekers, but employers have to pay to post ads) is a standard operating procedure for large oil companies and oil service contractors. But remember that there are still many smaller companies in the oil services sector being run by the older generation who are not comfortable with the internet age. So you still need to visit the library to borrow their newspapers even as you post your resume on the internet job boards.

The third method of looking for roustabout job vacancies is networking. This is how top level managers find new jobs so quickly. They talk to everyone they know. This same strategy can also work for you. While it is true that you probably do not have the industry contacts, you should still talk to your family, friends, ex-teachers, ex-classmates, and anyone else you meet in daily life. This includes your barber, family doctor and even the shopkeepers and clerks of the grocery and other shops you visit. The point is not to immediately find someone working in the oil industry. The real goal is to find someone who knows someone who knows someone, etc… who can introduce you to a job opening on an oil rig or oil field.

Most people just rely on the first two strategies to look for roustabout job vacancies. However, not so many people use the third strategy – most people are too shy or too lazy. However, the lack of competition is good for you, don’t you agree?
